NATURE AND RECREATION I VOLUME XXXI 2009
"AN ALMOST HIDDEN HIDEWAY FAMILY RESORT ON SCENIC ROUTE 6 IN VERMILION, OHIO"
I truthfully missed this quaint little cottage rendezvous on the North
Shore of Lake Erie. WALK IN THE WATER has an historic background thAt really intrigued
me once I read their brochure I found @ Quaker Stake and Lube in beautiful downtown
Vermilion. When I met the owners, Jody and Chris, and heard the historical story of
this neat getaway, I found out the true meaning of a community of people really dedicated to
give the visitor or local, the very best in fun in Vermilion, Ohio.
WALK IN THE WATER has a double historical meaning. Named for an Erie County
Wyandot Indian cheief, the steam engine cruise ship entered service in the summer
of 1818. With her low horse power, she was unable to buck the current on the Niagara
River in New York, so she had to be towed by a span of oxen from Black Rock to Buffalo.
The ship proceeded to cross Lake Erie from Dunkirk, NY. Erie, PA, Cleveland and
Sandusky, OH, and finally Detroit, MI. When full, the steamboat carried 200 passangers
and it cost $18 for the round trip. She also made trips to Macinac and Lake Michigan.
On October 31, 1821, she hit a stiff gale and was blown back in to crash on the shores
or Main Streeet Buffalo. The original vessel was a total loss, but later replaced.
This great family vacation destination is located on the North Shore of
Lake Erie with a beautiful private beach and a back yard which over looks the lake.
Plenty of activities are available and Chris and Jody will do their best to help
everyone to enjoy their stay. Their rooms which range from single bungalos, rooms
with kitchenettes, to large rooms with full kitchens. All rooms have A/C, cable tv,
and very clean and tidy!!! They have a beautiful new heated pool, a kids playground,
Charcoal grills, a patio on the beach, Wireless internet, and a fish cleaning station,
Located within minutes is downtown Vermilion, Cedar Point, the BAss Islands,
and only an hour from both Toledo and Cleveland. Major attractioon close by are
many local wineries, boat rentals, jet ski rentals, Put in Bay, and Kelleys Island,
The Kalahari, Castaway Bay, and Great Wolf Lodge water parks. Fishing charters,
Summit Motorsports Park, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as well as the Toledo Mud Hens,
Cleveland Indians, Browns, and Cavaliers.
Come stay at this great cottage getaway to relax, refuel, and enjoy the
